THE  STORY:
Greer Garson is enchanting as Mary Rafferty, the pretty maid who takes a job in the lavish home of Pittsburgh stell magnate William Scott. Scott's handsome son, Paul, defies social mores when he falls in love with the charming Mary. And though the Scotts adore Mary and approve of her marriage to Paul, Mary meddlesome father has his own political agenda. Embittered by a crippling accident at the mill years earlier, he curses their union by stirring up a violent strike that leads to tragic consequences.

BEHIND THE SCENES:
Movie mogul Louis B. Mayer finally got a contract with the handsome newcomer, Peck...although it wasn't exactly the deal he had hoped for. Peck continued to buck the system by refusing to sign a long-term, exclusive contract that would prevent him from returning to the stage. He agreed to a non-exclusive 4-film deal.

To the credit of the art directors, the entire film was shot on the MGM studio lot.

THE  DIRECTOR & PRODUCER:
Knopf and Garnet combined their talents on the highly successful Mrs. Parkington.

THE  CO-WRITER:
Nunnally Johnson was a popular journalist and  writer having penned the critically acclaimed Jesse James 1939, The Grapes of Wrath 1940, and Tobacco Road 1941.

THE CRITICS:
"Gregory Peck is quietly commanding as the best of the Scott boys." -- The New York Daily News
